Blog Post 1 Module 20

-If direct instruction is a learning theory that is supposed to maximize academic learning, then why are there so many other learning theories that can be applied in the classroom?

-Discovery learning is influenced by Piaget. In discovery learning, students are encouraged to actively discover and learn something through free exploring of the information that they're trying to learn. Even though it is a form of discovery learning, guided discovery can be seen with a Vygotskyian influence. The idea of guided discovery is that the teacher or instructor helps with enough guidance that the student is sure to discover whatever is supposed to be learned. This relates to Vygotky's theoretical zone of proximal development as the teacher is providing scaffolding and a way to ensure that the student will learn what needs to be learned. Another teaching method that has a Vygotskyian influence is inquiry learning. In this, teachers guide students by using their expertise to explain things to students as they go through the inquiring process. The teachers may help by scaffolding the students as they learn the given material.
