  • List a question, confusion, or something that surprised you about the Creativity/Gifted chapter.

I was a little confused on Renulli’s three-ring conception of giftedness. I understood that they are traits a gifted person has, but to what extent of all three categories are considered gifted? I feel like “gifted” is an extremely broad term that 3 general categories can’t really cover. In fact, I don’t really feel like the chapter broke it down well enough since there are so many different ways a student can be “above-average” or just ahead of their peers. I think there could have been much more explained, so that’s why I am a bit confused.

  • How is creativity a form of higher order thinking? What would creativity look like in your content area? Think about how you might encourage or assess creativity....

I think creativity means you can think in other ways that aren’t as common as what other people think. You produce results in a different manner or even just come up with completely different results. There isn’t one correct answer, or one correct path to find the answer. Diverging from the norm to get the results makes it higher order thinking since it’s above what most would do.

I really think creativity is important in the field of dietetics and nutrition. You wouldn’t want to eat the same thing every day, and you probably don’t. If someone is making a lifestyle change to eat more nutritionally balanced meals, it can be hard for them to come up with what to eat for every meal, every day. That is why I would definitely encourage creativity by promoting home-cooking. This gives them freedom to experiment in the comfort of their own homes, trying new dishes and new ingredients. I would provide basic recipes or ingredient ideas, such as, see what you can cook with peppers and a lean piece of chicken tonight, and have them go from there. A food diary can be really helpful with that, allowing us to assess together how they did and what they learned, and for the ability to recreate the best dishes!
