MODULE 26/28 POST 1!

1.  How do I, as a teacher, choose which types of assessment to implement in my classroom and when?  I want to be sure to use the most appropriate type of assessment at all times.

2.  Formative/formal: mid-semester checkup evaluation
formative/informal: notice that student is struggling with worksheet, ask him how he feels about the class/what is hard for him
     summative/formal:test at end of semester
summative/informal:  at end of semester, ask students how they felt about the class, observe children while thinking on the differences between their interactions on the first day of school and now

3. You can't really, because if it is summative it can still be very relaxed and informal, like just talking to a student on the last day of school.  The only way to tell the difference through watching is by seeing if the teacher responds to the assessments by changing the way he or she is teaching (formative), or by adjusting the curriculum for the next semester (summative).

formal: pre-planned, systematic (hw, tests, quizzes, projects)
informal: spontaneous, day-to-day observations (listening, observing, asking students questions)
formative: helps student/teacher see progress, check comprehension, make adjustments in order to improve learning (still in progress)

summative: at end of grading period (so teacher can see students' progress/teacher effectiveness)

  1. As a teacher you're going to use all of the forms of assessment. I feel that you're mostly going to be using informal assessment in the classroom because you are going to have more class discussions and daily interactions than planned out tests. I think it just depends on what you're trying to accomplish with the assessment. So if you're trying to analyze student progress and instructional methods you're going to use summative assessment, whether it be formal or informal. It just depends on what you want to get out of it as the teacher.
