I had a few confusions in these modules I’d like to address. What are the differences between graphic rating scales and descriptive rating scales? I also don’t quite understand how the circle diagram works on the subject of cognitive categories.
-Formative Formally: Giving a 5 problem quiz after each daily lesson in an Algebra class that covers only that lesson.
-Summative Formally: Giving an exam after each unit in an Algebra class that covers all lessons of the unit which assesses if the student has successfully learned how the lessons built on each other (documenting achievement).
-Formative Informally: The Algebra teacher will ask random students the next step in solving a particular kind of equation of the daily lesson.
-Summative Informally: Near the end of the semester in an English literature class, the teacher will conduct a class discussion about symbolism and other literature concepts about the short stories that were covered that semester.
You can tell whether an assessment is summative or formative because the purpose of formative assessment is to help the teacher figure out what material/concepts they didn’t teach well enough, so they can improve it before the summative assessment (exam at the end of unit/course) happens. The summative assessment usually is only assessing whether the student has achieved the knowledge, rather than judging the teacher’s quality of teaching.
