Assessment Post 1

- My question about assessment is how to assess music in a far and impartial way? How many ways can you grade playing ability?

- Formative formally - quizzes every friday

- Formative informally - teacher asks random questions to random students to see what they know

- Summative formally - Test at the end of a unit

- Summative informally - students could write a reflection of class everyday and the teacher could look at them at the end of the unit

- You can't because you don't know whether the student can learn from the assessment

  1. When it comes to assessing music performance fairly and impartially, the only real aspects you can judge are a) memorization of words, b) rhythmic accuracy, and c) pitch.

  2. I agree with Laurel with all the points that she brought up. It is very hard and subjective when it comes to grading music and creating assessments that can fairly assess a student's ability. Another aspect would be their stage presence and overall musicianship during the performance. Musicianship incorporates their appearance, confidence, and how they portrayed the piece that they performed.

  3. You have to create a descriptive rubric outlining examples of each skill you want to hear. If you teach them about the skills and make sure that everyone should know what you are looking for, you should be fine. It is always difficult to assess creativity.
