· Discuss a question or confusion from reading Module 28
1. Why do authentic assessments have to be poorly defined (page 500)? What if the student misinterprets the question?
· Performance assessment is important for most of you because you are assessing a performance or action of some kind. How is this kind of activity different from other kinds of assessment? What might performance assessment look like in your content area and how, specifically, might you assess learning through performance?
1. Performance assessment is different from other kinds of assessment because the student has to do (perform) something. They aren’t just writing/explaining it. The students will be acting out plays for reading or doing math drills for performance assessment. I will assess it informally. I will talk to the students about what they did well/not so well if needed. I will be able to see who’s doing well, and who needs a little help. I won’t really need a rubric, but I’ll write comments.
I think when the book said that authentic tasks were "poorly defined", it wasn't trying to say that authentic assessment was bad, it was saying that the point was to have a poorly defined task in order for the student to think creatively and do some problem solving and metacognition.
