Module 28: Blog Posting #1

1. I was wondering if anyone else had an opinion on the rubric system. For example, I feel that it’s a very “open-ended” kind of assessment and wouldn’t personally use it for grading in my classroom because it’s not very detailed in my opinion.

2. This type of assessment is different from the other kinds of assessments because it requires the student to physically show progress to the instructor rather than writing down the answers. It requires higher-level thinking skills and an ability to demonstrate their learning. Performance assessment in my field of music would be a hearing or recital of some sort. In my musical skills class, we have hearings for every unit that we cover in the class. This hearing is comprised of students going to their AI’s office and having different concepts of the unit practiced and ready to perform and demonstrate for the teacher. We receive some of the information in advance and we practice the skills in order to receive a good grade in the hearing room. Another example that I demonstrate is a voice recital. A lot of music students take weekly lessons with a teacher and a recital at the end of the semester shows their peers, parents and teacher exactly what they’ve been working on and it is demonstrated in front of their faces.
