| • • | • FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT | • SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT |
| • FORMALLY ASSESSED | • This type of assessment is very organized and planned by the teacher to track the students’ progress in their class. They are explained well in advance to students, such as a test or speech and they also help the student to discover what they need to work on and what they understand. | • This type of assessment is also very organized and determined well in advance. But this type of assessment is used by the teacher to realize not only the student progress, but also how well the teachers’ instructional methods and tools worked in their lessons. This type of assessment includes tests, scores on rating scales or a portfolio. |
| • INFORMALLY ASSESSED | • This type of assessment is a very spontaneous approach to tracking a students’ progress. This includes, daily observations made by the teacher just by having a class discussion or listening to peer-to-peer discussion during a lesson. | • This assessment is similar to the previous informal description but students can obviously be observed throughout an elongated time period and graded. Teachers can have students write in a journal once a week on a random date that isn’t assigned to see how the student is feeling about the week’s lessons and at the end of the semester/quarter, students can be observed by what they write. |

Module 26: Blog Posting #1
1. I wonder if there are any interesting ideas that any of you would have related to unique ways, other than tests, homework assignment, etc that a teacher could give to assess a students’ progress in a class?
2.
3. A summative assessment would be an assessment that is “testing” a students progress over a long period of time and determines their understanding of a large amount of information. This type of assignment would be used for a report card grade or overall grade in the class. A formal assessment is an assessment that is testing a students’ knowledge and understanding on one certain concept or a couple of concepts that is learned in a shorter length of time, such as a quiz. This kind of assessment would be used for a smaller weight in the class and to see how the student is progressing (or not) in the class.
