In the second video, the children are much younger and need to be guided through each step of the lesson. She talks very quietly and constantly compliments them in order for them to listen and for others to model each other. She also directs some questions as open-ended kinds of questions that the entire class answers at the same time. She also calls on students for answers; some of them raise their hands.
2. In the older classroom, they probably were motivated to participate in the classroom discussion because they knew that they were going to get called on eventually by the teacher. In the younger classroom, the teacher motivated the students by calling out who was acting the proper way and who wasn’t. She brought the students closer to her when she was starting her lesson so that they would focus on what was being taught. The younger classroom was being extrinsically motivated by compliments and verbal rewards from the teacher. The older classroom was mostly intrinsically motivated because they knew that the discussion wasn’t going to move on without someone answering the question correctly, so most students were motivated to answer as many questions as they could.
