· Do teachers grade based on the students individual work or compared to the other students in the classroom?
Performance assessment is important for most of you because you are assessing a performance or action of some kind. How is this kind of activity different from other kinds of assessment? What might performance assessment look like in your content area and how, specifically, might you assess learning through performance?
· The main different is that this activity is physical and requires students to carry out an activity or develop a product in order to show knowledge and skill. My content area is ballet and an example of performance assessment would be a recital or a ballet performance. Taking a ballet class and rehearsing for a ballet is very different than actually going on stage and performing. A student will learn a lot about themselves during a recital or ballet performances and usually a dancers weaknesses come out the most on stage.
I think the way a teacher grades a student can be based off many different factors. It is not just individual or a comparison. I think it depends on the subject, the teacher and the students. Individual grades are probably most common and most fair, but I can see there being situations where students are compared to others. It may not be the fairest method, but can be done.
