· List three questions you have about the midterm material (either directly from the list I gave you or describe your own questions/confusions). Respond to others' questions in the comments.
1) What is the main difference between concrete operational stage and formal operational stage in Piaget’s stages of cognitive development? They seem to intertwine and it is hard for me to tell from a scenario if a student is in concrete or formal operational stage.
2) “Within-class ability grouping does not appear to have detrimental effects on students ‘self-esteem, it does promote the achievement of some students over that of others” How does it not hurt a student’s self-esteem? If a student knows he/she is in the high group, then they may think do not have to try as hard and if a student is in the low group, they may think they are not smart so it wouldn’t help to try. When I was in 3rd grade, the 3rd grade teachers did this, and I always wanted to be in the high group, and it did make me feel bad that I wasn’t that smart, but just average.
3) Two auditory tasks cannot be processed at the same time, people can talk and listen to music at the same time and isn’t that processing two auditory tasks at the same time?
Also question for Jackie: How long should the short essay answers be for the midterm? One paragraph or several paragraphs?
I will respond to the rest, but I just saw the question for me. All of you write a little differently, but I think it should be comparable to a blog post, or one bullet point of a blog post. So, one lengthy paragraph, or two paragraphs? I will include more description within the midterm. I don't want it to be a huge essay (a page long) but I want it to answer the question fully.
