· List a question, confusion, or something that surprised you about the Creativity/Gifted chapter.
In Renzulli’s three-ring conception of giftedness, if a person has all 3, then the middle overlapping section means the person in gifted? So a person has to have all 3 to be considered gifted according to this theory?
· How is creativity a form of higher order thinking? What would creativity look like in your content area? Think about how you might encourage or assess creativity....
Creativity is higher order thinking because it often involves thinking “outside the box” with divergent thinking, and does not have one correct answer, but using creativity requires thinking of many possible solutions. Creativity often involves challenges, requires one to be curious and have intrinsic motivation. While solving a challenge, creative people are not afraid of be incorrect, and are okay with making mistakes to come up with a better solution, which requires critical thinking which is a form of higher order thinking. Creativity in Spanish Education could be thinking of possible solutions to a problem in a Spanish-speaking country or creating a video project showing a part of history of a Spanish-speaking country. When doing grammar concepts, creativity could be done through comparing Spanish grammar to English grammar and what the similarities and differences are. Creativity could also be having students talk in small groups about ideas over a project they will have to complete and sharing any idea that comes to mind. I could encourage creativity as a teacher by when a student answers wrong, saying something like “Not exactly, but thank you for trying” which conveys that the student is not exactly correct, but it was a good attempt. Also as a teacher, I can make sure that students feel comfortable by making sure students know it is okay to be incorrect, it is part of the learning process and helps students come up with the correct answer. I could show students a project that required creativity that I did in college or do an example of what a student project should be like.
