2. Creativity is a form of higher order thinking because in order to be creative one has to apply their knowledge, skills and ideas to their ideas. In my content area of music, most of the student’s learning is going to be based off of creativity. As I’ve stated before, there are hardly wrong or right answers in musical rehearsal, except for wrong notes or rhythms, so it’s up to the students to think outside the box when asked to perform a certain piece with an ensemble or solo. A certain piece of music can be interpreted in various ways and the variety of performance stems from creativity. For example, some students might think that a part of the piece should be loud, while others think soft. Neither are wrong at all, which shows how creative students can be.
I might assess my students’ creativity by having some sort of show and tell, incorporating just one piece of music that we have been working on and telling each student to come up with a new arrangement (changing rhythms, words, etc.) and present it to the class. I feel that this approach would be a fun and non-intimidating way to allow the children to be creative in their own way, while using their prior knowledge in music theory and rehearsal to compose their own piece, in a way.
