Blog Post 2 Module 8 and 21

-The clip that we watched is actually of a movie that I have never seen. I have heard about The Breakfast Club but I have never sat down and watched it. From what I can get from the trailer though, it seems like these students are all in a morning detention type situation. They all come from different cliques in school but they come together during their experiences in the breakfast club to learn valuable lessons about life. Another such situation in pop culture like this could be in Remember The Titans where the football players of different races had to integrate and learn to play together under a black coach in the heat of the civil rights movement. I would say that Vygotsky would be more in favor of extreme diverse grouping for students. I believe this because of his belief in the zone of proximal development. In this model it is shown that an adult role helps a student learn by providing scaffolding to aid the student's development. In this scenario the student benefits from the older person's experiences that they have yet to have. I believe that there are certain kinds of diversity that are more beneficial than others. It all depends on the learning situation and the students. For example coupling an adult mentor with a younger student would be good for the student's learning but if one were looking to have both parties learn as much as they could I feel it would be better to group students of like skills and knowledge so that they could still push each other to learn as much as possible.

  1. Remember that scaffolding does not always mean an adult teaching a child/student.... a diverse group of students will have a wide range of ability, and they will scaffold each other when completing a collective task (aiming for a collective goal).
