I had a few questions about this module. Can authentic assessments be summative and/or formative? Which kind of portfolio (process or best work) is better in general to assign? What are examples that explain the differences between graphic-rating scales and descriptive rating scales?
Performance assessment is everything in performing music ensemble classes, including both formative and summative. Mostly formative assessments are used in these classes, because the teacher is constantly providing feedback and reinforcement about how to play the piece stylistically and technically. Also, since the teacher is constantly hearing all of the students playing, the teacher is constantly assessing mentally. There is little to no authentic assessment in performing ensemble classes because the students are hardly ever trying to figure out how to solve problems by themselves, nor need to. Instead they are always being told what to do by the band director on how to work out problems (musically or technically with the instrument).
I don't see why an authentic assessment can't be both. I think it really depends for what the portfolio is for. Best work is great if the portfolio is something they can adapt for the future. Process is good because it shows growth. Both would be great for a parent teacher conference. Best work teaches students skills they'll need for their resumes and real portfolios. Description uses words to really tell the students what's expected of them. I'd rather go in expecting a 3 than think I did really well (5), & get a 3.
