Motivation Post 1

Questions/ Confusion

I was a little confused about incremental view of ability and entity view of ability. I think it means how students view their ability?

Intrinsic motivation would be most appropriate when it is about something they can use in their future. If it's material that they can use in everyday life or something they have an interest in would help motivate them internally. Extrinsic motivation is when your are doing the task for someone/ something else. Whether it's pleasing the teachers or getting paid by your parents for good grades. It might help them be motivated, but once the praise stops, so will their motivation.
I think a good way of motivating my students is to show how deeply motivated I am about the project. If I show how fun it can be then maybe they will see that and want to do the project too.

  1. I agree for the most part with your post. I disagree about the praise stops and so does their motivation. If a teacher is praising a child for a job well done then the student's self-efficacy and esteem would go up. This would in turn boost their intrinsic motivation so that they wanted to do more after the teacher stopped praising them. That is a good way to motivate them. If you are excited about it and they see your intrinsic motivation and that is external influence on the child's intrinsic motivation.

  2. The main thing to remember about the difference between incremental and entity, is that incremental view of ability is better for an individual. Entity people are cynical and don't believe in themselves...they see problems in their life as unstable and controllable. Unstable in this case doesn't mean something bad, it simple means that problems can be changed and factors can change for the better.
