-The learning theory that I find most valuable for my field that is ballet would have to be observational learning. This learning theory is essential to ballet because it involves both live and symbolic models. Not only should a student observe teachers, older dancers and professional dancers but also it is important for them to discover themselves as a dancer through discovery learning. The two methods match up because a student learning ballet must be technically correct which they can be aware of by learning through others but also they have to do some self-discovery. Everyone’s body is different and that is why not every method works for all dancers. An individual needs to take time to figure out their own body and what particular positioning or movements work best for them.
- One way that I would incorporate discovery learning in my ballet class would be to give my students a piece of music and have them come up with, or improvise, a combination. This allows them self discover choreography that they are strong or weak in. My learning objective would be to have them take classroom steps that they are taught in their technique classes everyday and apply them to creating a piece of art. Discovery learning helps them to accomplish this because they are actively internalizing the music and creating a combination of steps through unstructured exploration.
