How does a teacher figure out, without knowing what his/her classroom is consisted of (intellectually and socially), what approach to teach his/her class with?
Methods of fostering comprehension go along with Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development in that Vygotsky’s theory is all about an experienced and knowledgeable model guiding the student through intellectual experiences. In this type of teaching method, the teacher uses reciprocal teaching, which is mostly used at the elementary level and instruction is focused on the students’ comprehension skills. The teacher uses scaffolding, which Vygotsky also uses, and asks students’ questions and leads a discussion geared toward their comprehension. Instructional conversations are also very useful with this type of teaching method because the students feel that they actually have some time to put their opinions into the activity and helps with discussion. This method is based upon the student-teacher conversation and allows for a very balanced classroom environment. Teachers that feel comfortable with opening up their classroom to open discussion and opinionated conversation and doesn’t mind not having total control over the classroom would choose this type of approach.
I think teacher's can figure out their teaching method by the subject they teach as well as some of there lesson plans and activities. Many of these teaching approaches are known to work better for certain subjects and grades, so the teacher would focus on that as an outline for the teaching methods before the class begins. Once the class officially starts, they can make changes if they feel it is within the classrooms needs.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with Rebecca. I also think that teachers are taught in schooling what methods to use at first with their classroom. Therefore, they don't just guess and see what works best. Then after trying these different methods they can make adjustment to their students to which ever method works best for them. There maybe variations throughout the classroom and you could make accomodations sometimes if you have aids or extra help.
