Module 18: Post 2

· Watch the (quite vintage) videos below. You can skip through if you like.

· What elements do you see that are controlled by the teacher or centered around students? (specify which)

In the 1st video the teacher lets the students work without her control or help, letting the students have control, and then she brings the class back together, and once again resuming her control as the teacher. Then she changes the question about the similarities and differences, and is still using her control as the teacher. In the second video, the teacher has the control by telling the students exactly what to do, and praising the students when they follow her directions, and using that student as an example as what to do.

· What kind of motivation or learning differences would you expect from each class and why?

The first class is going to be motivated more intrinsically than the second class because the first video shows the teacher allowing the students to work together and learn on their own parts of the time. The second class is going to be more motivated extrinsically because they do not want to be scolded by the teacher and called out about their behavior in front of the whole class, and therefore will try to behave well. The second teachers uses instructional consequences by telling the student what they should do (how they should behave), and then when a student does behave that way, she uses that student as an example as to how to behave.

  1. I'm glad you see that in the first video, the teacher doesn't give up ALL control at all. She is making a lot of intentional decisions about how to structure the activity....
