Module 18 Blog 2

The woman from the first video tries to be in control of her class. All the desks are in rows facing forward. (On another note, the classroom is very cramped with little space to work with). The video starts with a short portion of individual work, but after that initial period, the teacher simply stands in front of the class, but she struggles for control over the group. She tries to just ignore the extraneous talking, but it is to no avail.

The woman from the second video seems to be more in control of her classroom (in terms of behavior), but she uses a gentle tone of voice, and is always calm and inviting to her students when she addresses them. When she notices someone off task, she calls out their name, and draws their attention to a student who is on task. She mainly teaches a group of readers in the front while most students sit at their desks quietly doing their own work. The second teacher gives up some control, but overall her class is much quieter and more respectful than the first teacher’s class.

The first classroom does not seem to work effectively, compared to the second. The first classroom is cramped, and it seems that students have a tendency to be left out of the conversation, especially if they sit near the rear or off to the sides. There are also loads of extraneous activity and noise. On the other hand, the second classroom seems like a positive learning environment, and the teacher appears to draw students into the activity, mainly because she gives them the opportunity to do their own work.

  1. I actually had the opposite opinion about the teachers. The teacher in the fist video seemed to support peer interaction, since it was a discussion setting, but because she had the desks all lined up, it probably hindered the interaction, forcing her to do most of the talking. I feel like the teacher had more control over her class and was more strict in general because she was very particular with directions she gave to the children on how to sit and act, unlike in the first video.
