Module 16/17-Blog Post #1

1. I was wondering how family life could tie into motivation in students. For example, if a student has an unstable family life, what type of motivation would work best for them and visa versa?

2. Intrinsic motivation is most beneficial when a student is thriving toward a goal or accomplishment in which the topic is something that they are very interested in. If the student is very engaged and enjoys the subject, they will be more willing to work hard and put in much more effort in order to accomplish what it is they are trying to accomplish. They offer a very stable sense of self-control and discipline to the student along with organizational skills and independent work ethic.

3.I feel that if students are not presented a task or assignment with positive introduction, students are far less motivated to put their full effort. In my subject field of music, I would stress that there really is no right or wrong answer to anything having to do with a student’s perception of a piece or the way they perform it. When students are aware that they have freedom and can use their own unique ideas, they get excited to “show-off” their thoughts to their peers and teachers. They are, therefore, intrinsically motivated to accomplish something in a field that they are passionate about. Music is very individualized and intrinsic motivation works very well in this field. The students feel satisfaction when they can perform the piece or discuss a piece with peers maturely, rather than receiving a prize for good work.

  1. To address your question, I imagine that if a student is in a chaotic environment at home, over which they have no control, they would respond well to an environment that increases intrinsic motivation. For example, giving them choice and attributing success or failure to factors under their control. Although, if they have learned helplessness, they may not respond right away. (some extrinsic motivation may be used at first?)

I really love your connection between intrinsic motivation and the individualzed nature of music. :)

  2. Perhaps a student's home life isn't that great, so they will be motivated to work hard and do well in school so they can eventually escape their home life? This would probably involve some form of intrinsic motivation. The good grades and rewards will help them to achieve their goal; however, they need to have internal motivation to keep working and pushing. Perhaps their family isn't very supportive, so intrinsic motivation is a must!

  3. For me my homelife really impacts me and my school work. My parents do value grades and try to push and encourage me to do well. Without the encouragment of my parents I probably would not try as hard in school. Yes, I do like to get good grades for myself, but since they are paying so much money for me to go to college I feel like I need to do well, since they are paying for me to get a great education. If my parents did not care I think it would make me not care as much and my motivation would be decreased.
