-One question I have for this is are there schools like Lonnie's schools in the country that we are unaware of?
-No, they are not different children. For James he is given the opportunity to have a good education, but he has no desire to want to be a lawyer. For Lonnie he is not given any opportunity to do well in school given his circumstances.
-The schools are different because they have a different atmosphere. Lonnie's school doesn't have the resources that James school has for him. The teachers at James school expect him to want to do well in school and to go to college and be successful. At Lonnie's school the teachers don't really care since none of the teachers have degrees or are certified to be teaching. This does attribute to the achievement gap because each school is setting their students up differently. How could a school preach to do well when in school and become successful when they aren't even certified to teach.
-Students from Riverdale might be more successful because they have a lot of extrinsic motivation that is helping them succeed and be good students. Where at Lonnie's school there is no motivation therefore, they may not do well in school and end up dropping out.
