• Watch the (quite vintage) videos below. You can skip through if you like.
• What elements do you see that are controlled by the teacher or centered around students? (specify which)
• In the first video one element that is controlled by the students are the discussions they are having with the groups they are in. The teacher is controlling the discussion but also allowing the students to talk freely if they want to respond to her questions. The fact that she does not just pick and choose students randomly to answer her questions shows that she is centering the lesson around them. This classroom is more relaxed than the classroom in the second video because the teacher has the lesson set up more as a discussion than a lecture. In the second video the teacher has total control over the class and is constantly telling the students what to do and when to do it. A few elements that are controlled by the teacher are telling them to be quiet, raise their hand when they want to talk, putting them in groups and telling them to put their hands on top of their books so they know not to open them. Her way of teaching is centered around the students because she feels that if they are following her directions that they will get the most out of the lesson.
• What kind of motivation or learning differences would you expect from each class and why?
• The main motivation of the teacher in the first video seemed to be that she wanted the students to work together to talk about the lesson but then come together as a class and have a controlled discussion with one another. The main motivation of the teacher in the second video seemed to be to keep her students under control and listening to her rules. She would tell the students when particular students were doing something that she liked or that she did not like. The main learning difference would be that the first class seemed to be strictly engaged in the lesson and not worrying about being quiet or breaking rules and that may be because they were a lot older than the students in the second video or the teachers style of teaching.
I like your answer, but I also think that the motivation from the students was very intrinsic in the first video because of the fact that they didn't receive anything from the teacher like compliments (second video) but were motivated to get the answer right. The second video with the younger children was extrinsic because once one child heard a compliment given out by the teacher about another student, the other child tried to model their behavior in order to receive something in return.
