Social Cognitive Theory and Sociocultural Theory Blog Prompts Blog Post 2

You will be teaching students who are from many different cultures and backgrounds, with different assumptions about learning. Some cultures value (as intelligence) good storytelling rather than logical or mathematical capability. What potential cultural differences must you be most sensitive in your content area? (Are there any which might conflict with the values you have for your students?)
·         The way people learn will be the most sensitive in my area. I have to try to figure out how everyone learns best and accommodate them all (to a degree).  The level of respect will be a bit of a challenge, but classroom rules should help with that. The more outgoing children tend to be more loud & blunt (it may be a little more difficult for their feelings to get hurt) whereas the shy kid may be afraid to speak for fear of being made fun of.
In your future teaching, you will be creating a classroom culture. This is a common culture among students (independent of all the of the other cultures in which they are a part). The culture which you create will determine what is valued as intelligence and learning within your classroom. What are the most important aspects of this culture to emphasize for your content area?
·         The most important aspects of this culture are the respectful environment and the learning multiple ways. Students are more likely to talk when they feel respected. It is easier for me to judge if the students have learned by listening to them talk about the material. Some people learn verbally or aurally, so this would help them. (This also helps the students evaluate themselves to see if they need to make a change in their behavior. I will use tactiles (which often will involve play dough because you can make it into whatever you need for the hands on learners. I will have the information displayed on the board for the visual learners. I will try having my students take notes to see if anyone benefits from that.
