Questions/ Confusion

When it was talking about identifying giftedness through IQ scores I was a little confused about the discrimination part of it. How does it discriminate? Is it the test itself that discriminates?

Creativity is a form of higher order thinking because it requires an individual to think outside the box and use information they already know and analyze and evaluate that information. It also requires them think of many different solutions or ideas to a given problem/ assignment. In my content area (art) creativity would be represented by how the student goes about the project. I would ask myself questions such as these: Did he/ she come up with interesting ideas for their project? Is it different from the rest? Did they only stick to the minimum requirements or did they go beyond what they were required to do? I would encourage creativity by inspiring them with examples of art that relates to the assignment. If I wanted them to do a self portrait, then I might show them examples of Picasso and show how he uses color and form to express his emotions. I would also encourage creativity by giving them freedom and not putting down their ideas. I would want them to use as much imagination as they wanted.

  1. I agree that giving the art students freedom to figure out alternate ideas without shooting down their ideas automatically without consideration, but I don't really think your idea about having the students imitate other artist's own unique ways that they created their product has anything to do with creativity...in fact it sounds quite like the opposite. Just an idea.

  2. Well I was hoping it would inspire them. Getting them to think about different ways they can represent themselves. I was not anyway saying they should copy the artist.

  3. I think IQ tests discriminate because they don't necessarily account for exceptional creativity, artistic talent, or leadership. By using other identifiers (in addition to IQ tests) teachers can more fully identify giftedness. Also, students with learning disabilities, students from low income backgrounds, and students from different ethnic backgrounds tend to get overlooked, because even though they have the natural talent to perform well, they have not had the environment in which to cultivate those talents.

  4. I think your idea of looking at someone else's artwork is a great idea because it can give the student the opportunity to expand on the piece of art you are giving them. Not only will they learn the techniques of other artists but they can learn about themselves as an artist and creator.
