module 23 post 1

1.  I honestly didn't have any confusions from this chapter, but one thing that I found fascinating is the breakdown of social class-to-words-per-minute.  It is INCREDIBLE the difference in words spoken to children between lower socioeconomic classes and higher ones.

2.  Creativity is a form of higher-order thinking because it requires originality and imagination applied to a purpose.  There are times in everybody's career when a new and innovative idea must be thought of, and to come up with such an idea, one must use a part of the brain that is different than the part that would, for instance, solve a math problem.  Those with creativity must also be less affected by the opinions of others, because there is a vulnerability involved in presenting one's own idea that is not involved in editing a paper for grammatical errors.  Grammar is either right or wrong, and if one takes the steps to learn all the grammar rules, that person need not be worried about what others think...if he doesn't like being incorrect, he can study more.  But when it comes to presenting a new idea, there is no right or wrong.  People either like it or they don't, and if they don't, it is a lot more personal.
              Luckily, in my field (music education), creativity is easily accessible.  It can be exemplified in many things, from the improvisation a vocalist uses when singing a solo, to the thematic and sequential reasons that the president of the orchestra wants to play three songs in a certain order.

  1. Yes I found that interesting as well the difference between social classes. That is very important for all teachers to know and take into account when they are teaching their class. That is a good point about creativity being subjective. In music creativity is definitely easily accessible as it is an artistic expression but it is also a lot of learning and memorization of scales and chords. It is a combination of the memorization and creativity that truly create this artistic expression.
