· Reflect on Module 15 and discuss why or why not Terry's method of motivation is effective. (You can also discuss whether using extrinsic forms of motivation would be beneficial in your classroom, while assuming YOUR motivators will not be fear and pain!)
o Terry’s methods of motivation are effective, but not for the right reasons. I would say they are effective because productivity in the office has went up, since Terry has been there. His methods of motivation on work though because people are scared of him because he is a big football player, who could probably beat any one of them up, and he has a loud, scary voice. He basically attacks a worker when they are not doing what they are supposed to, so workers will do what they are supposed to more because they do not want to be attacked, and who really wants to be attacked?
o I think using extrinsic forms of motivation would be beneficial in my classroom through some ways. From middle school, I had a teacher who would give extra credit points for turning in major projects early, and I think this is a great way to use extrinsic motivation. It teaches students to manage their time better and to not procrastinate, and get assignments done either on time or before time. It seems like so many students procrastinate until the night before something is due and then a lot of students do not do a good job on the assignment, so this way of extrinsic motivation in my future classroom could teach students a lot about time management, especially since I want to teach high school and high school students need to develop strong time management habits to do well in college.
I assume 'by the right reasons' you mean that he's motivating people through fear? And we don't want our future students to be motivated through fear? Yes! Very true! However, in a way, fear and being pushed over can be similar to an approving look from a teacher or gold stickers....
ReplyDeleteI do like your example, though. It's a nice way of scaffolding time management. Also, the reason that I like it, is that I don't think the students would be come DEPENDENT on the extra credit if it were taken away (they could probably do just fine). I think the dependence issue is what might make extrinsic motivation good or bad.
