- Reflect on Module 15 and discuss why or why not Terry's method of motivation is effective. (You can also discuss whether using extrinsic forms of motivation would be beneficial in your classroom, while assuming YOUR motivators will not be fear and pain!)
- In the dietetics field, extrinsic forms of motivation are extremely beneficial, especially praise. Encouraging clients that are on the right track to change and have completed their goals set is important to their overall success and future motivation. If I was constantly unsatisfied and criticizing them for their actions, they would become discouraged. Positive reinforcement through praise is highly used in the dietetics field. Rewards could also be used as a motivator, but not as easily. Often medical nutrition therapy deals with limiting foods or controlling portions, so offering a food reward is difficult. If the client met their goal then adding a favorite food item back could be considered and useful as a motivator. Overall, praise is the most used extrinsic factor in the dietetics field, but given the right circumstances, rewards could be beneficially used as well.
Yes, the Terry Tate video was extreme, but you believe that using other external things like praise and rewards (like raises) contribute positively to the company? That's totally reasonable, and interesting. It's the general practice in companies to give people raises and make them work for external rewards. You don't comment on this, but I wonder if you feel the same why about schools? A lot of people feel uncomfortable making students work for grades or other rewards in a classroom (although it's somehow alright in a workplace). It's interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'll be very interested to see your writing next week, because I imagine that intrinsic motivation is even MORE important for the dietetics field. I know I can't go running or eat healthy if I'm feeling crappy inside....
I agree with you on the importance of intrinsic motivation versus the use of extrinsic motivation in your field. I had a similar scenario in my blog post because I'm going into PE and the most important thing about PE is getting children to want to exercise. This can only come from within the students themselves and it comes not from rewards but from the inner satisfaction of knowing that they've done a job well.
