Blog Post 2 Module 15

-I'd say that Terry's method of motivation is quite effective. I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to be blind-sided by a 200+ lb linebacker. Although this method is effective in getting people motivated to work, it is also effective in scaring them away from the job that he is trying to get them to do. In my classroom I believe intrinsic motivation is going to be key. In a PE setting, even though students may be motivated by prizes for first place, they will stop caring for it and they will not be into it anymore. The best motivation for PE is intrinsic, the satisfaction a child gets from a compliment from the teacher on a job well done performing a difficult skill or doing well on a physical test. One such example of what is changing about motivation in PE is how exercise is no longer be pushed to be used as a punishment. Physical educators have learned over the years that pain and physical punishment does not motivate students to do things more, in fact it pushes them to do the opposite. What is needed is positive reinforcement to motivate children to learn well in any classroom setting.

  1. I think PE is similar to choral instruction (and a comment I made to another student below) in (at least) one way.... Students need to be comfortable and confident enough to try new things, especially when they think they might be judged by someone else. Those motivators or praise would be great for that goal--getting the students to feel comfortable in the environment. Afterward, once they feel comfortable, the praise might be unnecessary and actually block progress.

It's interesting that exercise used be used as a PUNISHMENT.... considering motivation theory, that doesn't make any sense at all, does it? Not only is exercise NOT the goal, but it's the thing that children begin to fear.

  2. wow, I really like the comparison that you used in this ad. I never thought that physical activity was once used for punishment, until I really thought about it. In swimming if we weren't doing something right our coach would make us swim more. But, however I would see how more physical activity would make one perform worse and not try. I belive that doing well in physical activity is intrinsic movitation, but also does acquire a little extrinsic motivation. I remember that I would do so much better if I had friends come to my swimmeets and were in the stands cheering me on , rather than having no one there for me. Also, for realy races I would want to do well for my team and the members on my swim team.
