module 7 post 2
The first boy in the video is most likely in the pre-operational stage of cognitive development, and the girl is probably in the concrete operational stage of cognitive development. Piaget would say that the boy is exhibiting centration, because he has the inability to focus on the first and second statements and how they relate to one another at the same time. Piaget would say that the girl is about to manipulate their operations and engage in two-way thinking. I would tell the boy “using only what you know from this piece of paper, answer the question on the next piece of paper”, so I’d be reminding and encouraging him to use the knowledge from the first notecard to answer the next notecard, this would be involving his zone of proximal development. I would present a visual aid of a shattered glass sitting next to a feather, and then repeating the statement on the notecard about how the feather broke the glass, then see if he would answer differently. I wouldn’t need to teach the girl in her concrete operational stage the concept, because she is already more advanced than that. Using her in the video was to show the difference between the two stages.

You give a really nice example of trying to MAKE the tasks concrete for the boy! I like it. Also, a great use of scaffolding within his ZPD.
ReplyDeleteI agree that some centration might be happening. It may also be that he is thinking about the concept of a feather from his past experience and cannot simultaneously consider this new concept of a feather that has been introduced by the researcher. You make a good point, but is it possible that he is in concrete operations? He can think about the scenario without it being physically in front of him.
