When I went to the pet store to buy an elephant, I ended up having a crazy day instead. When I arrived at the pet store to buy the elephant, I was actually conned into buying a fish bowl. Come to find out, they didn’t have any fish in stock after I already bought the no-refunds bowl, so I just decided to buy a milk cow to milk into the fish bowl. After buying this milk cow, I formed a successful business selling milk jugs filled with yummy milk. I gave some of the milk jugs to my family as presents. But they didn’t like their milk jug presents, so they laughed at me like I was some sort of silly clown.
This activity was pretty confusing to figure out, the directions kept throwing me off. I ended up not doing it the way I was supposed to because I thought it asked me to write down as many objects I could during a 2 minute period. I thought maybe that seemed too easy, and I’m still not entirely sure exactly what it was asking me to do. So, I guess you could say it was “difficult” for me since I was so confused. I don’t feel like memory encoding happened at all when I performed this activity, but I could see how it could with minor adjustments in the directions.
Even though I’m going to assuming that I was supposed to stare at the objects for 2 minutes WITHOUT writing anything until after that two minute period, I still don’t think this activity involved encoding too much. A lot of it was sensory memory because you were trying to take out all the information you JUST took in a moment ago onto paper, before it fades away. Some of the object though will obviously stick into your long term memory through encoding.
I agree that most of the activity was sensory memory specifically because the first time I looked at it for two minutes without making the story, I could hardly remember many of the objects for more than the 2-3 second mark, and then it became a lot harder, and that is a factor of sensory memory. I also think that some objects automatically are easier to remember for some people because they have a personal connection, for example if their is a baseball and someone is a baseball player, they are going to be able to remember that one of the objects was a baseball easier than someone like myself who doesn't play baseball and doesn't like sports much at all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the last part of your comment, for me there were some words that were easier to remember and I think it was just because the personal connection was stronger than the others. For example that particular day I was craving donuts and milk for some reason haha those two words were really easy to remember because that's all I was thinking about that night,
