The main thing that this chapter talked about was brain development. Some say that brain development is affected solely by our genetic system and others say that the main factor affecting our brain development is the environment that surrounds us. In the chapter we can see that both affect our brain and that our genetics interact with our environment in a structured way to create the best efficient system for us.
Most interesting thing about the chapter and why? How does the reading connect with past teaching or learning experiences? Future questions?
I thought that the most interesting part about the chapter was when they compared the ability of a kid and an adult to learn a second language. I thought this was pretty interesting because I come from a different country and immigrated into the U.S. when I was ten so learning a new language (English) wasn’t too hard for me, on the other hand for my parents who have been exposed to English for the same time as me have not yet become fluent on it. I would like to know why is it that older people have more trouble learning new stuff and if there’s anything they can do to help them learn more at their age?
Lastly...
The picture above shows the number of synaptic connections between the neurons, as we can see at birth there’s only a few but at six years the activity peaks as this is the time where most of the connections occur. During the teenager years these connections are “pruned” meaning they’re reduced allowing them to become more directed and efficient for the brain.
