Brain Research Blog Prompts Blog Post 2 (Activity)
I will teach proportions. (This is a one-on-one model.) We could potentially use textiles to demonstrate what we currently have as we do each step. I will have the student read the story aloud to me. I will have them take a yellow highlighter to highlight the word “is” in the story. I will have them the percent, the “is”, or the “of”. I will show them how to find which number is the “is” and which one is the “of.” [The corresponding number normally follows the word it corresponds to (“is” or “of”).] I will draw a diagram showing that %/100 = is/of. I will have them fill in the table with the information given. We will use an appropriate symbol for what we are looking for. I will teach them how to cross multiply (if necessary…hopefully they will know how to cross multiply before they try proportions). (100 x “is”) over (“of” x %). We will divide the answer appropriately. (This depends on which variable is missing). I will have them write the answer next to the problem and highlight it with green. I will have the student explain what we just did then do an example on their own after they ask me any questions they may have. This lesson includes aural, visual, and perhaps even textile mediums.
