Visuals, interaction, and persistence are three ways of learning that are mentioned in the video. We can use this information as well as the information from the book regarding synaptic connections in educating children. In teaching a child the alphabet we can provide the visual text of each letter. By saying the letter out loud, while presenting the text we are allowing for a neural connection to form. We can also teach the alphabet through song, which allows for interaction. It also allows for persistence when you consider how the song is easily embedded in your memory, and everybody knows it which allows for much practice You could also continue to teach the alphabet through various other visual means. You can have a day for each letter and have the children bring in items that start with that letter which allows for visual input as well interaction. You could also have the children practice looking for the letters within their environment, which again allows for visual input and interaction.
I really like the idea of having children bring in items that start with a specific item because it allows for them to be imaginative. I remember in elementary school there was the alphabet on the wall and each letter had an animal or object associated with it.
ReplyDeleteYou have many great ideas that would help children learn about the alphabet. At that age, children like to be engaged and interactive with what they are learning. Having them find the letters in the environment is a way to have them be involved in their learning. Also, your idea of bringing in items from home is great because again, it has the students being interactive, but also the parents. Parental support in learning is very important to a child's success. Having the parents interact with their child's homework and helping them learn is crucial. Something maybe to think about when teaching a child the alphabet, is to have them also write the letter. This would help start the writing process and is another interactive tool for hands-on learners. Since children will eventually have to begin writing letters, this will help combine learning with application. Overall, your combination of teaching techniques would be very effective in educating young students about the alphabet.
