- The big picture of Module 6 is the relationship with the brain and learning. The Module described the physiological aspects of how the brain develops throughout an individual's lifespan. It also showed the way neurons fire and interact with one another. This reading compared and contrasted old beliefs about the brain and learning with newer findings that encompassed aspects of neuroscience, psychology and education. This will help discussions of how to help teachers teach students more effectively so that students retain more when they are taught.
-This Module did make sense to me. What I found the most interesting was how easily the old scientific findings were tossed to the side for the new ones yet they were still kept around to augment the new research. I thought that was interesting because it almost seems like a double standard to me. This connects my previous experience with school because it shows how the teachers were trying to help us learn more effectively. It wasn't just mindless repetition, it was variation in different mediums to help us retain the knowledge better. I'm curious as to see what studies there are with motivation and learning. I did understand the material pretty well.
-What is happening in the picture is an example of synaptic "pruning". This shows how the synaptic connections are at their highest in a person during early childhood. This "pruning" or thinning of synapses as one gets older helps more efficient functioning of the brain.
