-In this scenario Dwight is being conditioned with the sound of the computer and the altoids. The technique that is being used here is called classical conditioning. In this scenario there is a unconditioned stimulius, a unconditioned response, a neutral stimulus, a conditoined stimulus and a conditioned response. So, first the guy reboots his computer and hands Dwight an altoid. He does this a few more times. In this scenario the computer turnign on is the neutral stimulus and the altoid is the unconditioned stimulus. As he starts to reboot his computer over and over again Dwight receives an altoid everytime the computer starts. By the end of the conditioning when the computer turns on Dwight puts out his hand thinking hes going to recieve an altoid. In this case the conditioned stimulus is the computer turning on and the conditioned respons is Dwight thinking he will recieve an altoid. He is being positvely reinforced because he is being given an altoid everytime the computer makes noise.
-A scenario that could use classical conditioning in a classroom could be used for students learning how and when to line up to leave for the school day. This could be started as the teacher telling the students to line up for for the end of the day, and the bell immediately going off. As this happens, the bell going off completely after the teacher telling them to line up, they pair these two associations together. By the end of a few times, the teacher will not have to tell the students to line up, they will just hear the bell and immediately start lining up to go home. The teacher here is teaching students that the school day is over when the bell rings. Even thoughth association is being made this could cause problems because even though the bell is going off doesn't mean that class according to the teacher is techniquely over. Therefore, postive and negative reinforcement could be used, so that students know that the school day is over when the teacher says it is. It would look similiarly to the video because an action would be reoccuring right after something is done, which here is shown by Dwight wanting an altoid right after the computer reboots.
Remember, there is no discussion of 'thinking' in Behaviorism! :) The pairing is between the behavior of Dwight sticking out his hand and the bell on the computer.
ReplyDeleteWhat would it look like to teach some kind of academic content through behaviorism? Be sure to think about that, in addition to these very simple pairings.
